Mr and Mrs. J. married since forever. antique collectors. Their room was filled with art and beautiful furniture. The missus was an artist, the mister a collector. They struck me as interesting immediately. They were living in our long term facility but only the Mrs really needed assistance. The husband was there by choice. I'm pretty sure The Notebook was written by inspiration of these two. So unlike most couples in long term care, their beds were pushed together. One day while Mr J was telling me about one of his treasures, I was making their beds. The Mrs. had an "accident" on her side, and I cleaned the bed without drawing attention to it. Mr turned to me and said "you know what? At night there's nothing more that I love than being able to wake up and just hold her hand.". There's love of many kinds and theirs was of the romantic kind. They loved eachother and their mutual love of beauty in things. They supported eachother through everything including things neither one of them could fathom dealing with. This relationship was beautiful. This relationship set me back about 3 years. Now I was afraid...... afraid of the devastation either will endure when one passes. I never want to feel such loss. I loved their commitment and NOW value it even more now, because I get it. Living life with such LOVE, makes life. It makes us who we are, we may not show it overtly by romanticism, but our actions and true respect for one another. Now my husband can attest, I pushed him away many times early on, but to have lived and loved is better to have never loved at all. And it's worth every moment and memory no matter our destiny.
